"Best" and "worst" performing countries on progress towards MDG 4 and 5

The charts below highlights countries' progress in reducing child and maternal mortality, according to the 2008 Countdown to 2015 report.

Reducing child mortality: The left hand chart lists the 10 best and worst performing countries' progress towards achieving Millennium Development Goal 4, to reduce the under 5 mortality rate by two-thirds by 2015.

Reducing maternal mortality: The right hand chart lists the 10 Countdown countries with the lowest and highest maternal mortality rates, used as a proxy to measure progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5 on improving maternal health. Many countries with the highest mortality rates have a recent history of armed conflict and limited funding for health  services.
