Having a
broader understanding of the environment in which health services are delivered
and health outcomes produced is essential to increase coverage of maternal,
newborn and child health interventions.
The Working Group on Health System and Policy Indicators tracks a selected
number of indicators that are necessary to increase access to and utilization
of health services. The indicators are
reflective of the MNCH continuum of care. They also relate to the building blocks of WHO's framework for health
system strengthening, namely evidence and information, leadership and
governance, service availability, financing and health workforce.
The Countdown Report 2008 includes information on 13 such indicators for the 68 Countdown priority countries. Results demonstrate that only
few countries have adopted a range of policies that would be necessary to
scale-up MNCH services more rapidly.
Future
efforts of the Working Group will focus on the formulation of improved
indicator definitions as well as their periodic monitoring. The Working Group will also strive to
integrate policy and health system considerations into global and national
efforts to accelerate the progress towards the United Nations Development Goals 4 and 5. |
