Improving equity is essential for achieving the health-related United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Inequities in health have several dimensions, including socioeconomic position, gender, place of residence and ethnic group. Mothers and children belonging to disadvantaged groups are less likely to receive essential preventive and curative interventions, and as a result show higher morbidity and mortality. The Countdown efforts should not only aim at promoting the increase in coverage levels for the population as a whole, but also ensuring that disadvantaged groups do not lag behind.
The Equity Working Group will carry out regular analyses of survey results from the core Countdown countries and provide breakdowns of key reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health indicators according to the different dimensions of equity. A study will be carried out on how different strategies for delivering interventions may affect equity, and relate changes in the degree of inequity to progress towards the MDGs. These analyses will be conducted by the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, one of the Countdown priority countries.
