Dr Songane's Address to IPU Parliamentarians
Call for Parliamentarians to Legislate for the Health of Mothers and Children

Cape Town, South Africa - 15 April 2008

altSpeaking on behalf of the Countdown to 2015 Partners, Dr Francisco Songane, Director of The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health, called for Parliamentarians to legislate to save some ten million women and children who die each year.

Dr Francisco Songane spoke to several hundred IPU Parliamentarians from across the world who gathered in Cape Town, South Africa to attend the 118th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), just a day before the opening of the Countdown to 2015 Conference and 2008 Report launch.

While presenting and discussing the findings of the Countdown 2008 Report, Dr Songane noted that some countries have shown rapid progress towards the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.  "We know what to do!", said Dr Songane, naming the steps involved to this rapid progress, which are:
  • to promote the universal coverage of effective interventions;
  • to integrate health care delivery throughout the life cycle (continuum of care);
  • to strengthen and build a responsive and sustainable health system;
  • to sustain adequate funding;
  • and most important, to promote leadership, commitment and action.
Dr Songane ended his speech by urging Parliamentarians to join him and attend the UNICEF panel on maternal, newborn and child survival and the Countdown to 2015 Special Session, both events being organized within the context of the IPU Assembly and the Countdown to 2015 Conference, respectively.
